“The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. 1 Samuel 2:6-7
I don’t think people really understand what they are saying sometimes. For example, take this quote from the comment section of a news article on the hate crime (God has made of one blood all the lineage of men Acts 17:26) Charleston Shooting and really pay attention to what the person is saying here:
“I do not support organized religion, but if prayers bring any kind of peace to those affected and those who wish to offer support then I say go ahead and pray. Anything we can do to come together and offer comfort is good.” –see article here
Did you catch it? This person doesn’t believe in “organized” religion, but anything we can do to “come together” and offer comfort is good? Isn’t. that. organized. religion.? Isn’t that what we do during worship service when we come before God and hear his words of absolution and forgiveness of sins, eat His body, and drink His blood, submit to the drowning of our old Adam in the waters of Holy Baptism, and pray together?
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
If you continue to read the comments section you can see the anger that people have for a deity who seemingly cannot stop shooters from killing people.
“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker… Isaiah 45:9
If there is one thing that convinces me other than God’s Word itself that God is real it is the anger and scorn of unbelieving men (and women) and their railing against a God that they say does not exist.
…because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty. Job 15:25
How can you be so very angry at something that does not exist? Those who do this should remember that they are …
…nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’? Isaiah 45:10-11
I did an in depth word study this morning. In particular it was this verse:
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
re learned that “be still” means relax, sink down, withdraw, abandon, let drop (particularly the hand). Someone put it to me this way once, “In submission is peace.”
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. … Psalm 51:17
“Exalted” means be lifted up, high, raised up, take up, set up, erect, set on high, remove, to lift off and present, contribute offer, to be taken off, abolish, to be rotten, to be wormy.
“And I, if I am lifted up
on the crossfrom the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” John 12:32
“Among the nations” made me think of some of Jesus last words to His disciples while still here on earth:
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
“In the earth” made me think of this Truth:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
When you really break down Psalm 46:10 it is nothing less than John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son
to be crucified on a horrible bloody cross, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Men can rail and vaunt all they want against God, but He is real. He is there. He is listening.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.
He continues to pour out mercy and grace even on the unbeliever…
…for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Luke 6:35
Even on those who shake their fist at him. This scripture comes to mind when I think about it…
The word of the Lord endures forever.
And this is the word that was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:25
Jesus, I cry out to you at the death of those people in Charleston SC at the hand of a man who believes the lie that there is no God. Do those who rail against you not realize that they are part of the same hatred, the same lie, the same strong delusion? Do those who rail against you not realize that they are just as lost and dead as Dylan Storm Roof? Oh God, may they hear Your voice of Truth calling to them out of the depths of a dark world controlled by the evil one…the liar…the deceiver…the Father of all lies and hatred and prejudice – the vine of wickedness. Jesus, you are the True Vine. May we be reconnected to you through the power of Your
love blood poured out for the remission of our sins on the cross. You died that we may live. You died for my sin, for Dylan’s sin, for all people’s sin. You came back to life that we may be justified in your sight by faith and receive new life, new birth! Grant us faith, Father, to believe. I pray for all those who have been affected by this swath of dark death in Charleston. You are the God of all comfort. Comfort them, dear and precious Lord. Comfort them as only you can comfort, for you are the God of ALL comfort. Place in the hearts of all people a deep desire to overcome the shaking of their fist at You in their limited wisdom to drop their hands and seek true wisdom from above. A wisdom that says that in the weakness of raising Your one and only Son on a cross, forsaking him, and crucifying him there is a greater greatness than exalting oneself in the power of the flesh. For your spiritual power is made perfect in weakness. Your Son, Jesus, (Immanuel, God with us) became weak, that we may become strong and have eternal life in His name. Grant this Lord to all who read and heed Your Word. In Jesus amazing name, Amen.
