Did Heaven Gain An Angel?

“Children often have imaginary playmates. I suspect that half of them are really their guardian angels.” ~ Eileen Elias Freeman

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

Charles Stanley quoteThis is a delicate issue, but I speak the truth in love.

speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ…  So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.   They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts… That, however, is not the way of life you learned  when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus…Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor…

There is one error that I hear over and over and over again.  When a loved one dies I hear so many people say, “Heaven gained an angel today.”

going to heaven

Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

Whenever I hear that heaven gained an angel, I wince.

for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

I wince because it unwittingly misrepresents God, heaven, angels, and our own soul and its need for salvation.   It is a deception…an outright lie from Satan.

He (the devil) was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Let me speak the truth in love and please listen.  We do not die and go to heaven and become angels.  We do not go to heaven and get our wings.  Heaven does not gain an angel when someone dies.

These are just a few of the many scriptures that tell us what angels really are:

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

angels came and attended him.

.He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility— a band of destroying angels.

The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side

..the angel said to them…

They minister, guard, attend, protect, destroy, deliver believer’s souls to heaven, and convey messages from God just to name a few.

Not only do they play an integral part in our lives today, but angels will have a huge role to play on the final day:

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous.

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

…the harvesters are angels.

They will come with Jesus when He returns.  They will blow the trumpet, gather, separate, weed out, and harvest souls.

JesusreturnNo where….I repeat in love….no where in scripture does it say that we become angels when we die.

As a matter of fact when we die our souls will need to cling to what God’s angels proclaimed to the shepherds.  The good news right from the angel’s mouth is this:

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

What GREAT NEWS for human beings!

And God makes a clear distinction between angels and our Savior, Jesus:

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

The Son Superior to Angels

 For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”?

 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

Let all God’s angels worship him.”

 In speaking of the angels he says,

He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”

 But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.
 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
    and your years will never end.”

 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet”?

And so I repeat in love

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Around our pillows golden ladders rise,
And up and down the skies,
With winged sandals shod,
The angels come, and go, the Messengers of God!
~Richard Henry Stoddard

So what are we if we are not angels waiting to get our wings?  God makes a clear distinction between angels and us.

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

How do we know who the children of God are?

This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God‘s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

And for those who believe the message announced to the world by angels this is a promise from Jesus Himself that we can hold on to:

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

And

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

And where is that place?  It is eternal life in heaven…with God and His angels!

So the next time you hear someone say, “Heaven gained an angel” you can smile because you know the truth.  Also, say a little prayer for that person that they, too, would learn the truth, for…

This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Jesus, sometimes I think to myself as David did, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.  But, Jesus, we are not angels that we can just fly away.  Your word says that

“the years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty;  yet their span is but toil and trouble;  they are soon gone, and we fly away.”

Doesn’t that mean that we go to heaven and get our angel wings?  If we delve into God’s Word even more we see that

The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

God, Your mercy and faithfulness in Jesus Christ are the wings that protect us and upon which we fly.

And let us

not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

We have your promise that one day our souls we will be flown to heaven by you and your angels, and by faith we believe it because your Holy Spirit said it.   In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About lifevine

Hi! My name is Amy. I am a former atheist and, for a season, practiced witchcraft. God drew me out of darkness 17 years ago and gave me the spiritual gifts of knowing and faith. He gives me daily encouragement and affirmation and I hope to share Him with you. If you have not yet met the one true God, His name is Jesus Christ, and may I be the first to introduce you to Him? He is the Restorative Savior God promised Adam and Eve 6,000 years ago (Genesis 3:15) after they had sinned in the garden, bringing separation from God because of disobedience. It is rightly reported that a little over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem He was born of a virgin, lived a blameless perfect life in and around Jerusalem, died on a cross on Golgotha for the world's sin, and 3 days later rose again. YES! ROSE AGAIN! AMAZING! Please get baptized in His name, and walk in an eternal restored fellowship with Christ. You can get to know Him by reading, marking, and inwardly digesting His Word.... His Holy Bible.

  1. Yes. Well put. I once attended a women’s retreat that focused on what angels are and what they aren’t — at Trinity Monroe. And the leaders did an excellent job of delving into the Word. Many of the points they made, are what you have said here. Pastor Aubuchon one was of the teachers.

      Thank you. When I went to St. Peter in Petersburg the Mary Martha Circle did a study on angels. It was when I was newer in my faith and I learned a lot. One of the women shared that she had been visited by an angel 2 weeks after her husband died. He encouraged her and helped her accept the reality of his death. She was much comforted by the encounter and I will never forget her testimony about it. I was definitely strengthened in the faith. Thanks for reading. God’s blessings upon your day, Jennifer.
