The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out. Lev 6:13
I became familiar with The Burning Man festival in my mid 20’s. My favorite heavy metal band (Queensryche) introduced me to its existence, and although temptingly titillating, I did not, by the grace of God, succumb to that kind of orgiastic debauchery.
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. Eph 5:11
BUT, there are a lot of spiritual connotations that I glean from my limited understanding of the Burning Man. The one thing that strikes me the most is the participants desire to be united in community. Their website repeats this desire over and over. Is it not the desire of every human being to be united? Ironically the group that started this yearning for community is called the San Francisco Cacophony Society.
Through the peace that ties you together, do your best to maintain the unity that the Spirit gives. There is one body and one Spirit. In the same way you were called to share one hope. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over everything, through everything, and in everything. Ephesians 4:4-6
The Lord has had me and another Godly friend of mine in the book of Ephesians for quite a while. We may wander into other books, but He always brings us back here. He has especially been revealing Himself to us in the area of Spiritual warfare and the armor He has given us. If you are like me you can read a scripture over and over a million times, and then one day…WHAM!….some new revelation hits you and you wonder how you didn’t see it before. That’s what happened to me this morning as I was meditating on this scripture…
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
The word “sword” popped out at me and I realized God would have said “swords” if He had meant swords, but He did not. He specifically said, “sword.”
There is only one sword.
Then another scripture quickly followed and the Lord showed me something that strengthened me in a new and unusual way…
…so the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. Ephesians 4:13-16
At this point I had a picture in my mind of
this huge the body of Christ, from the beginning of time to the end, wielding a sword.
Praise the Lord! How precious to us is this ancient and enduring eternal Word of God!
This scripture quickly followed…
But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:14
The word ‘mature’ swiftly connected with ‘stand firm’ and ‘full measure’. And then the Lord immediately led me to these following scriptures:
… always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured. Col 4:12
….so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:4
As I meditated further on the implications of the Burning Man and how people are really seeking the unity and fire that only the one True God can supply, these words inspired by the Spirit of Unity came to mind…
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace 1 Cor 14:33
…for our “God is a consuming fire.” Heb 12:29
If you are involved in the Burning Man or any type of witchcraft or pagan festival or worship I encourage you to see the emptiness of festivals and incantations organized and created by evil men…
For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 2 Peter 2:18
And come to the only One, Jesus Christ, with the ultimate power through which you can truly live…
Summon your power, O God; show us your strength, O God, as you have done before. Psalm 68:28
What are you looking for anyways? Is it not a burning Truth that transcends this evil fallen world? I think of Jesus and the two men who walked with him on the road to Emmaus…
They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” Luke 24:32
There is a pure and holy burn. Is that not the one you may be searching for?
Take up arms then!
Pick up that sword!
That one sword which is the word of God!
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God…the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:1-14
Isn’t that the fire you’ve been searching for all your life?
God’s word is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword and cuts as deep as the place where soul and spirit meet, the place where joints and marrow meet. God’s word judges a person’s thoughts and intentions. No creature can hide from God. Everything is uncovered and exposed for him to see. We must answer to him. Hebrews 4:12-13
Father God, You sent your Son, Jesus, to be the Burning Man for our sins. He suffered extreme burning agony in the Garden of Gethsemane and upon a wooden cross. The flame of His passion poured out for us in that burning fire of sacrificial love now touches our hearts and burns within us. May your Word go out and light fires of Truth in the hearts of all who read and hear your Spirit-inspired words. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
