I encourage my son to have an open hand with the Lord and let the money flow where God wants it to go.
I encourage him to tithe at least 10% ( in Christ we should tithe what the Holy Spirit leads us to tithe) and he does. He is very faithful in this. More faithful than his Dad. But his Dad is getting there. In our morning talk the Holy Spirit revealed a lot of things to us. Mainly, attitudes of greed, disrespect, selfishness, and unbelief when it comes to God’s word on money.
It has been said that Jesus spoke more about money than any other subject in the Bible. Could that be because he knew the powerful allure money would have? Money is an idol in most people’s lives.
The power of money in our life keeps us from seeing the power of God.
“I, the LORD, never change. That is why you descendants of Jacob haven’t been destroyed yet. Since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my laws and have not followed them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Armies.(He doesn’t want your money…he wants you first and foremost) “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’ (lack of trust?) “Can a person cheat God? Yet, you are cheating me! (lack of trust, again) “But you ask, ‘How are we cheating you?’(do you think your money is yours and God has nothing to do with it? Where does your strength come from to earn money?) “When [you don’t bring] a tenth of your income and other contributions. (you cannot serve both God and money) So a curse is on you (are you struggling in your finances or other areas of your life?) because the whole nation is cheating me! (not very many followers of Jesus actually mature in this area. Salvation is at once, sanctification is a life long process.) “Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the LORD of Armies (this is the one area in which God beseeches us to test him because he knows how absolutely pivotal and how much of a priority it is in our faith walk) “See if I won’t open the windows of heaven for you and flood you with blessings (not curses). Then, for your sake, I will stop insects from eating [your crops]. They will not destroy the produce of your land. The vines in your fields will not lose their unripened grapes,” says the LORD of Armies (tithing diminishes your struggle in this area because God promises to act.) “All nations will call you blessed because you will be a delightful land,” says the LORD of Armies (people will see that you walk the walk and talk the talk.) “You have used harsh words against me,” says the LORD. “You ask, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ “You have said, ‘It’s pointless to serve God (Do you want respect? You must first respect and trust God with ALL your body, soul, mind, heart, spirit, strength…including your money.) What do we gain if we meet his standards or if we walk around feeling sorry for what we’ve done? (and yet don’t tithe?) So now we call arrogant people blessed (arrogance and unbelief scorns tithing.) Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.'” Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD paid attention and listened. A book was written in his presence to be a reminder to those who feared the LORD and respected his name (consider testing God in this area out of respect.) “They will be mine,” says the LORD of Armies. “On that day I will make them my treasured possession (God loves you so much that even as you tithe your treasured possession he affirms that you are His treasured possession because you are worshiping him above your money.) I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him (back to that respect thing again.) Then you will again see the difference between righteous people and wicked people, between the one who serves God and the one who doesn’t serve him (remember, Jesus is returning to expose the motives and secret thoughts of each man’s heart). Malachi 3:6-18
What are the secret thoughts you have toward God about money?
I believe tithing can be one of the last things we struggle with before total commitment to God. I know I did. But when I tested God on this He showed me in a major unexpected way how He provided. He cannot lie and He will do what He says He will do!
You will mature in awesome ways with your walk with the Lord if you start tithing…I guarantee it, but better yet, Jesus guarantees it!
It helps to remember that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ. He freely gave, shouldn’t we?
