I woke up this morning with this scripture on my mind…
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Heb 4:12
As I meditated on
this often times uncomfortable verse it, another scripture came to mind…
Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is the reason that many people in Israel will be condemned and many others will be saved. He will be a sign that will expose the thoughts of those who reject him. And a sword will pierce your heart.” Luke 2: 34-35
I think the Lord gave me some new insight into wielding the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. He showed me that as I hold out the word of God, it is living and active. It not only penetrates the heart of the listener, but it penetrates the heart of the speaker as well, piercing it and dividing soul and spirit; joints and marrow. It judges the speaker’s thoughts and attitudes as well as the listener. Could double-edged mean that it thrusts a blade into 2 separate hearts at the same time rather than a double-edge into only one heart?
Or maybe it means both?
I may be way off, but it’s just a thought.
Another thought as I continue to ponder Luke 2:35; Does God give us these verses to understand that the words Simeon spoke to Mary are also for us? Are the words a “sword will pierce your heart” the knowledge that as we carry around the death of Jesus in us and witness to Christ’s resurrection, He is
painfully working salvation or condemnation in not only other people’s lives, but in our own life as well?
I know that when I hold out the Words of Life I feel cut to the heart, too.
Father God, thank you for your word. As painful as it can be sometimes, it is Truth and it is Life. I am thankful that you are my Abba, Father, and desire to know me intimately, and desire that I know you. May Your Holy Spirit at work in and through me bring life and salvation to others. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
