I came across this quote I had posted some time back. It is so good I think it bears repeating as many times as possible. “Some of the greater things in life are unseen; that’s why you close your eyes when you kiss, cry, pray or dream.”
That brings up thoughts of the other day when my teenager was, with wide eyes, focusing on the temporal pleasures of this world.
It was making me very uncomfortable. I asked him a simple question. “Name some things in this world, seen and or unseen, that are free, but more valuable than any earthly wealth?”
Of course, in his humorous, off-the-cuff response he immediately said, “Sons!” But then he got into the groove, and we took turns naming free things one by one; Moms, Dads, relatives, families, friends, people, life, breath, smiles, health, beautiful scenery, rain, snow, storms, rainbows, trees, earth, gravity, sky, clouds, birds, animals, pets, insects, oxygen, water, growth, grass, sunlight, sunrises, sunsets, seasons, stars, moon, planets, universe, joy, happiness, peace, kindness, faith, hope, love, salvation, etc…
After a few minutes of this, even I was becoming more amazed at how many free gifts we take for granted everyday. This reminds me of another quote I have taped up in my bathroom cabinet. It says “If you don’t think you’re rich, just think of all things you have that money can’t buy.”
I also think it bears recognizing that free gifts come from a “Giver.” And oh what a generous Giver He is! The Apostle Paul understood this when he said in 2 Corinthians 2:12, “Now, we didn’t receive the spirit that belongs to the world. Instead, we received the Spirit who comes from God so that we could know the things which God has freely given us.” 2 Cor 2:12
I think it bears recognizing, also, that the reason we can’t easily see the free gifts right before our open eyes is because of our sin. And that is why the greatest free gift ever given the human race is found in Jesus Christ. He existed from the beginning, was born 2,000 years ago in human flesh, lived 33 years, died on a cross for our sin, was buried and 3 days later he rose!
This Gift will last unto eternity.
Jesus, it is with you in mind that I post this song:
Father God, Luke chapter 9 verse 25 says, “For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” Keep us ever mindful of the most important things in this life. Help us to be thankful for the gifts you freely give, especially the Greatest Gift, Your Son. It is in his name I pray, Amen.
