The chicken or the egg?
I’m so glad I know the answer to that question! So many people let that age old question haunt them. Unbelievers will never know the answer for sure.
That leads me to the question, “Who then is a believer?” Paul, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit said in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (and the verses immediately preceding Romans 10:9? Good stuff, too!)
If you are struggling with faith I have a question for you? Which came first? Your faith or God? Did you choose Jesus? Or did He choose you? (John15:16, 1 Co 1:27, Eph 1:4, 2 Th 2:13) Did you decide to believe? Who’s faith is it – yours, or God’s, given to you as a gift? (For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. Romans 11:29)
The answer lies in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word.” (Jesus is the Word.)
Jesus Himself said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. Get the connection?
It ALL begins with God. If you think you choose God or decide to believe in Him you are worshiping idols of reason and free will. And the Bible says “everything apart from faith is sin.” Besides, if you really do believe that your faith depends on your choice or decision then you will never have assurance of salvation because it will always depend on your choice or decision (or a prayer you said) rather than on God’s word. Just like the unbeliever will never know which came first? The chicken or the egg?
And that brings up the question of free will. Nah! We’ll save that for another blog.
Father God, Thank you thank you thank you for the gift of faith! It is the most precious of all gifts because it begins with Jesus! He lived, He died, He rose again! Hallelujah for those who believe!!! In Jesus name, Amen!
