I watched ‘Jaws’ when I was a teenager. Mistake! I couldn’t go into a body of water after that (even a harmless swimming pool!) without thinking that a shark was going to come up at me from underneath and pull me under.
Thinking about this reminds me of what Jesus said. “I will make you fishers of men.” He didn’t tell me that sometimes I’d have to swim with sharks!
I watched an Animal Planet promo the other day on sharks. Someone was safely swimming with sharks in a shark proof cage. NOT! You’d think that when they designed them they would make sure the openings would never allow a shark to penetrate the safety, but nooooo! In this particular video shot a huge Great White shark charges the cage and, before you know it, the shark is in the cage with the divers!
Did you ever notice that sharks swarm where there is blood to be found?
I see Jesus’ church as a kind of shark proof cage of supposed safety within a deep vast ocean of lost souls. We are to be fishers in this ocean and cast out the bait and hope someone hears the gospel of Jesus Christ and takes the bait, but sometimes the sharks are swimming in the cage with us, and you can’t point out that fact to a shark. They are a shark. They just can’t understand that kind of wisdom with their tiny little shark brain. They are big, dumb, mean, hungry, selfish, arrogant fish.
So what should we do? Punch them in the nose and hope they don’t
eat bite us? Hope they turn tail and escape back the way they came? Nope! I think that when a shark is in the cage we need to deploy the weapons of spiritual warfare and take our stand against the powers of this dark ocean until one of us is dead.
Is it scary swimming with sharks? Yes, but Jesus is in me, and He who is in me is greater that he who is in the
